    Areas we serve

    Banff & the National Park

Banff townsite, Tunnel Mountain, Middle Springs, Lake Louise and Castle Junction. The most photographed landscape in Canada and, for a drone operator, effectively closed. These pages exist to answer the question honestly rather than to sell a shoot that cannot legally happen.

    The airspace across Banff

Banff National Park. Parks Canada prohibits launching, landing and operating a drone within the park without a permit issued for a restricted purpose. Commercial listing and marketing work is not a purpose those permits are ordinarily granted for.

    What that means in practice.

6 locations in this corridor, of which 6 sit in controlled airspace requiring a NAV CANADA authorisation. That authorisation is filed before a shoot date is confirmed, not after.

    1. Aerodromes in play.

Banff townsite heliport operations (park-managed), None relevant — park law governs before airspace class, Kananaskis (Village) heliport operations, None within the park boundary. Each has a circuit that is plotted before a local flight, because uncontrolled airspace is not the same thing as unoccupied airspace.

    2. Mobilisation.

Between 80 and 120 minutes from the Calgary base. The nearer locations are same-day; the furthest are scheduled against the weather window rather than the drive.

    Conditions across the corridor.

    Banff

A mountain townsite on the Bow River, ringed by peaks rising well over a kilometre above the valley floor.

Bow Valley funnelling, with strong diurnal variation between valley floor and slope.

    Castle Junction

A valley-floor crossroads where Highway 93 South leaves the Trans-Canada, with the cliff bands of Castle Mountain rising straight off the forest on the north side of the junction.

The valley the Bow Valley Parkway follows funnels wind along its axis, and chinook westerlies run the corridor's full length — academic for aerial work here, since the binding constraint is legal rather than meteorological.

    Kananaskis Village

A mountain resort valley on the Kananaskis River, ringed by front-range peaks with substantial vertical relief.

Front-range valley funnelling with sharp diurnal shifts.

    Lake Louise

A glacial lake in a high cirque, ringed by peaks and ice. Extreme vertical relief in every direction.

High-altitude cirque conditions with rapid change — operationally demanding even where flight is permitted.

    What gets shot across Banff.

All delivered through the same aerial photography and cinematography services, scoped and quoted before the shoot is booked.

    Banff questions, answered.

Do you need airspace authorisation across Banff?

In much of it, yes. Banff National Park. Parks Canada prohibits launching, landing and operating a drone within the park without a permit issued for a restricted purpose. Commercial listing and marketing work is not a purpose those permits are ordinarily granted for. The specific address is confirmed against NAV Drone before every flight, because airspace boundaries do not follow town limits.

How far is Banff from the Calgary base?

Between 80 and 120 minutes, depending on the location. The nearer locations are same-day; the furthest are scheduled against the weather window rather than the drive.

What gets photographed most in Banff?

Chiefly tourism hospitality, resort terrain, luxury residential. The subject mix drives the shot list: a corridor of acreage estates needs boundary and approach coverage, where an industrial corridor needs repeatable overhead passes flown from identical coordinates.
